Walgreen's Shopping Trip 3/29

I only did one transaction this week at Walgreen's.  I hadn't planned on shopping at Walgreen's this week at all but I needed the training toothpaste so I decided to go ahead and roll one of my $5 Alamy RR that would expire next week.

Here is what I did:

Purchased (2) Renuzit sprays @ $2.99
Purchased (2) Colgate @ 2/$6
Purchased (1) Lady's Speed Stick @ $1.99
Purchased (1) Aquafresh Training toothpaste @ $3.49
Purchased (1) Snicker's Egg @ $.29
total:  $17.75 (at sale prices)
 - BOGO sale on Renuzit (took off $2.99)
 - used (2) $1/1 Renuzit printable
 - used $1.50/1 Colgate from 3/27 SS
 - used $1/1 Colgate from Walgreen's Diabetes & You Spring
 - used $.50/1 Speed Stick from 3/27 SS
 - used $.75/1 Aquafresh training tp (from a sample I received at Dr.)
 - used $1/1 Walgreen's Aquafresh training tp coupon from April book
 - used (1) $5 RR from Almay
new total: $3.01 OOP (paid with gift card)
total saved: $18.02 (at shelf price)
RR received:  $4 from Colgate, $1 from Speed Stick

I could have gone ahead and used another RR and paid less OOP, but I would have had to add more fillers and didn't want to take the time to do that.  So I just paid a little more and saved myself some headache.  I have to head to Target later this afternoon so I'll share that trip later!

CVS Shopping Trip 3/27

I ran in CVS and did one transaction.  I began my trip with a $6.99 ECB and a $1 ECB.  I increased my ECB by $4.51!

Here is what I did:

Purshcased 1 Physicians Formula concealer stick @ $6.39
 - used $1/1 from 3/27 SS  (I did not get the $6 CRT since I only hit CVS once last week, but if you did even better!!)
Purchased 1 Hall's 30 ct. cough drop @ $1.87
 - used $.75/1 from 3/27 SS
Purchased 1 Colgate toothbrush @ $2.99
 - used $1/1 from 3/27 SS
Purchased 1 Skintimate @ $3.49
 - used $.55/1 from 3/27 SS*
total:  $13.44
 - used $6.99 ECB
 - used $1 ECB

total spent: $3.45 OOP (used a gift card to pay)
total saved: $12.46
ECB earned:  $7 for Physicians Formula, $1 for Hall's, $2 for Colgate, and $2.50 for Skintimate

* I had major issues with this coupon.  The register would not take it and the manager could not override it in the system.  She ended up just giving me cash back for the value.  Not sure what is going on with it.  Maybe you will have better luck.

Walmart Paid Me to Shop!

Well, sort of.  While I didn't technically walk out with cash in hand, Walmart's new coupon policy helped to pay down my total so I had less OOP!  I had several coupons that were valued over the price of the item.  Walmart's new policy allows for overage on coupons to be applied to your balance.  After my coupons, not only were those items free, but I had $4.39 overage!

Here is what I purchased:
(2) 40 ct. Gain dryer sheets @ $1.87
  - used (2) $3/ any Gain sheets from 2/13 RP
Free plus $1.13 overage on each!
(2) Wardley Goldfish food @ $1.48
 - used (2) $2/1 printable
Free plus $.52 overage on each!
(1) Purex 3-n-1 sheets (travel sz.) @ $.97
 - used $ 1/1 (no sz restriction) from 3/13 RP
 Free plus $.03 overage!
(1) Revlon Nail Clipper @ $1.42
-used $2/1 printable (on Target site but is a manu. Q)
Free plus $.58 overage!
(1) McCormick Taco seasoning @ $.52
 - used $1/1 McCormick seasoning from 3/13 RP
 Free plus $.48 overage!

$4.39 overage applied to my total!

Here is a breakdown of the coupons used on other items:

2 Ronzoni Smart Taste rotini @ $1.08
 -used 1/2 printable
$.54/each (less than CV brand)
2 Daisy cottage cheese @ $2.24
 - used (2) $.65/1 printable
$1.59/each (less than GV brand)
1 Danonino yogurt 6 pk @ $1.97
 - used $1/1 from 2/27 SS
$.97
1 Lay's potato chips @ $2.50
 - used $.55/1 from 3/13 SS
$1.95 (less than GV brand)
1 dozen Great Day Natural eggs @ $1.62
 - used $1/1 printable
$.62 (less than GV brand)

I also stocked up on canned veggies, tomatoes and rice since they were at a decent price ($.50/each) this week (price matched).   The only other things I picked up were dairy, meat, produce, and a few frozen items.

My total before coupons:  $61.63 (inlcudes price matches)
total after coupons:  $42.78!!
total savings:  $18.85 (not including price matches, so actual savings is greater)

Not a bad week at Walmart!

Friday Featured Recipe

My goal is to use at least one new recipe each week in my Menu Plan.  Each Friday, I will review that recipe here.  Good or Bad.

This week we tried this new recipe:  Broccoli Cheddar Nuggets.  I have to give my honest opinion about these.  They were just okay.  Nothing special.  My 1 year old gobbled them up (no surprisethough as he has never turned down anything!) but the rest of us could have gone either way.  They never really got crispy and lacked flavor.  We had to add more salt as we ate them.  I froze the leftovers and they were a soggy mess after being reheated.  I had high hopes but sadly these won't be making it into my recipe box.

Did you try any new recipes this week?   Leave a comment!

Sunday Coupon Preview

Here are the coupons you might* find in this Sunday's paper.  There are several coupons that can be used in CVS and Walgreen's deals.

We can expect these inserts:

Smartsource
Redplum

* Insert coupons can be regional.  There is no guarantee that you will get every coupon listed and the coupon values may differ.  If you don't get the coupons you hoped for you can always order from a clipping service.  I have used My Coupon Hunter in the past but she is going to a subscription service only.  You will pay a monthly fee for a certain number of coupons per month.  This may be a great option for some of you.

I recently ran across a new (well, new to me) website of recipes.  Tasty Kitchen is full of yummy recipes.  One of the recipe categories is Homeade Ingredients.  I have really been trying to make as many things from "scratch" as I can.  Not only is it healthier, but often times, cheaper.  Now, I do only try to only make those things that won't take me hours to do. Saving time is important too!  One of the main reasons that I like things homeade, is that I know exactly what goes into it.  No funny stuff, nothing I can't pronounce.  I want to keep my family as healthy as possible.  Now, that's not to say that we don't ever eat processed/convienence foods.  I just try to cut out that stuff where I can.

A few things that I already make homeade:  taco seasoning, cream of "whatever" soup mix, enchilada sauce, chicken broth and applesauce.  I also cook my own dried beans rather than buying the canned stuff.  I am excited to try my own breakfast syrup soon, too!  I love knowing what is going into my children's bellies!  A few things that caught my eye that I am planning to try:  Homeade Ricotta Cheese (who knew it was so easy!), Edible playdough and Ranch dressing just to get me started!

This site has everything from dog biscuits to air freshener.  If you are at all interested in making things homeade, go take a peek at this site!  You can get to it here!  Another thing I like about this site is that the recipes come from real kitchens and real people (and it's part of The Pioneer Woman!).  It's not full of recipes from a labratory kitchen that no one "real" has ever even tasted.   Don't worry, this is not a paid endorsement, just my honest opinion.  Go check it out!

Anyone have any homeade recipes you'd like to share?

I stopped in Walgreen's this afternoon to see what products were  included in the buy 1 Almay, get $5 RR deal.  I assumed that it would only include the higher priced products.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that the eye makeup remover, priced at $4.19, was also included.  If you happen to find the Walgreen's Beauty guide in your store, it contains a $2 Almay coupon.  (I found it at the Beauty counter.)  Using the coupon, pay just $2.19 and get $5RR back.  If you got the $2 Almay insert coupon this weekend, you can stack them and pay just $.19.  Either way, it's a great deal.  It's even a moneymaker with no coupons!

Homeade Breakfast Syrup

Kingdom First Mom shared this article about making your own homeade syrup!  Now, this is something that I have never done this before but this looks so easy I'm going to give it a try!  We go through a lot of syrup around here and not only is this only $.35 for 1 1/2 c. but it's also much more healthy.  (I didn't say low calorie!) None of that weird, unknown, can't prounounce it stuff here!  I might just have to sneak it into the old syrup bottle and see if they notice! :)

Hay Bale Garden - Phase 1

I recently learned of a new way to have a garden when you have limited space or don't want to go to the trouble of a full garden (this is us!).  Straw bale gardening.  Who knew?  You can grow your veggies in a bale of straw.  This is what they use in the Midwest.  Now, I am from the south.  We don't have access to straw bales, but we do have lots of hay bales here in East Texas.  I wondered if hay would produce the same results.  I did my research and found out that it would!  So we decided to give it a try, on a small scale, this year and see what happened.  I will document, success or fail, our results as we go along.  *Disclaimer*  Please, please, please do not take this as instruction on how to do this.  I am not an expert by any means.  I have done tons of research prior to even thinking about taking this on.  If you choose to follow along, please do your research first and do what is best for you.  There are many methods to doing this.  I simply chose what worked best for us.

Phase 1 - Preparing your bales

We decided to start small this year and only purchase 2 hay bales, just in case it flopped.  We can always add more next season.  I placed them with the twine (since it was plastic and wouldn't rot) on the ground as it allowed more surface room to plant.  You can do it either way. The bales need 4 - 8 hours of sun per day so we placed them in our yard where they would not get that harsh afternoon sun this Summer but would get plenty of morning sun.  (We have very little shade at our house!)  The bales need to be decomposing or "cooked" before you plant in them.  There are a couple of ways to do this.  The first would be to leave them sitting out during the winter months in the elements.  The second, is to wet them down, and keep them wet, for a couple of weeks before you plant.  We chose the latter.   I will have to water them down a couple of times a day and make sure they are really soaked.  I will do this for next 3 days.  The bales will begin "cooking" inside.

After 3 days of watering, we will begin adding organic blood meal to the bales.  (I am really wanting this to be as organic as possible so this is the route we chose.)  Beginning on day 4 we will add 1/2 c. blood meal to the top of each bale and water it in really well.  This will be repeated for 3 days.  On days 7-9, the blood meal will decrease to 1/4 c.   On day 10, we will apply 1 c. of organic fertilizer per bale and water in.  After day 12, the bales should be cool enough inside to begin planting.   I am so excited to see how this goes.  We are planning to plant tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini and beans and maybe some herbs in between.  This is a learning experience for all of us and I am excited to see what it brings!

Weekly Shopping Trip 3/20

This week, I really didn't plan to do much shopping at CVS or Walgreen's.  I did hit Target & Walmart.  I spent a little more this week than I normally do (although still well within my budget) because I had several things that I was beginning to run low on and wanted to use up a few coupons that would be expiring.  I chose to do that this week since the deals really weren't there for me at CVS/Walgreen's this week and I have more than enough toothpaste, deodarant and toothbrushes to last a very long time. :)  There was only one thing at CVS that I stopped for.  Sorry, I don't have pictures this week.  It was not my normal shopping day so things were a bit crazy.

Menu Plan Monday 3/21

We have a lot going on this week so we'll have lots of easy dinners! And my husband and I will celebrate our 11th wedding Anniversary on Friday s we're going to enjoy a night out!  It doesn't seem possible that it has been that long!  It seems the closer we get to Summer, the busier we get!  Often, I begin to tire of the same old recipes.  I am going to start trying at least one new recipe each week to feature on a separate blog post.  I am also going to put up a linky so you can share your recipes with me.  I am always on the lookout for new recipes!  If you don't have a blog you can always leave your recipe in a comment.  I will post the featured recipe each Friday.  I hope you'll join me!

Here are our dinner plans:

Monday - Build your own Mexican Bowl with beef, beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, salsa,  and tortilla strips

Tuesday - fish sticks, mac & cheese, broccoli cheddar nuggets

Wednesday - Santa Fe Chicken (from freezer), flour tortillas

Thursday - Jalapeno cheese sausage dogs

Friday - Dinner out

Saturday - Dinner at in-laws

Sunday - leftovers/sandwiches

My Shopping Trip 3/14

I got back on schedule today for my weekly shopping.   It was nice to have my routine back.  I did manage to get to CVS yesterday.  I only made one quick stop at Walgreen's but plan on going back later in the week when they restock.
